Ruger 10/22 BX-25 Magazine BANNED IN CANADA !?

Ruger 10/22 BX-25 Magazine BANNED IN CANADA !?

Because Ruger advertised their BX-25 “high capacity” magazine to fit their SR-22 Pistol as well as their SR-22 and 10/22 platform rifles the RCMP banned (Prohibited) them from being imported into Canada. This is  kind of redundant! The SR-22 pistol has a barrel length of 3.5″ or 88.9mm which is too short for Canada’s legal permitted pistol barrel length of 105mm. And the other ridiculous part of this “law” is that they don’t object to identical magazines being imported by other manufacturers NOT advertising the fact that it fits the SR-22 pistol.

I applaud the RCMP for their diligence at enforcing a law and yet at the same time I laugh at their idiocracy (idiotic bureaucracy)!

You can purchase 50 round .22LR drum magazines and 25+ round .22LR magazines from many fine manufacturers, just not the OEM part from Ruger.

I will say however that some manufacturers are better than others. You always get what you pay for!

As the old saying goes “The proof is in the pudding…” so I trialed several types of magazines for my SR-22 rifle with a bunch of different ammunition manufacturers to establish whether or not there was a trend in feed reliability, and needless to say Yes indeed there was a trend…

Included in my trial were the following brands of aftermarket 10/22 rifle magazines and .22LR ammunition:

  • Butler Creek 25 round Hot Lips
  • Butler Creek 25 round Steel Lips
  • Black Dog 50 round Drum
  • Pro-Mag 10, 25, 32 round magazine and 50 round Drum
  • Tactical Innovations 25 round Advanced Composite Adjustable Steel Lip
  • Tactical Innovations 25 round Machined Aluminum Adjustable Steel Lip

Also included was the Ruger BX-1 10 round magazine as a reference.

  • Winchester 22 Long Rifle 37 gr. Varmint HE
  • Federal 22 Long Rifle 40 gr. Game-Shok
  • Remington 22 Long Rifle 40 gr. Thunderbolt High Speed
  • Remington 22 Long Rifle 36 gr. Viper
  • Remington 22 Long Rifle 33 gr. Subsonic
  • Remington 22 Long Rifle 36 gr. Golden Bullet

I won’t bore you with all the details and the numbers (then again I didn’t get too technical with my analysis) other than by saying that the very best combination of the day (excluding the Ruger BX-1 reference magazine) was:

  • Tactical Innovations 25 round Machined Aluminum Adjustable Steel Lip
  • Winchester 22 Long Rifle 37 gr. Varmint HE

Great feed, and good accuracy at 50 yards (indoor) !!!

The poor performers of the day were disappointing performances from:

  • Butler Creek 25 round Hot Lips (The Steel Lips were not much better!!!)
  • Black Dog 50 round Drum (Very poor feed for the last 10 rounds of every batch of ammunition fired.)
  • Remington 22 Long Rifle 40 gr. Thunderbolt High Speed (Very poor performance in ALL magazines, very inconsistent and cheap ammunition… say no more!?)

For those of you wishing for more capacity I do recommend the Pro-Mag 50 round Drum…

fun factor x10 !!!

  1. Where can i find teh Tactical Innovations 25 round Machined Aluminum Adjustable Steel Lip in canada ? thank you

  2. … The mag doesn’t fit into the “prohibited” SR-22 pistol. It fits into their “non-restricted” SR-22 rifle (very different than the pistol) as well as the “restricted” 10/22 Charger PISTOL… Because it is designed to fit into the Charger PISTOL, widely available in Canada… It is limited at ten rounds as per Canadian Law. Pretty simple really.

Ruger has since “created” an identical magazine, but marked differently, that was NOT designed for the Charger PISTOL. These are legal in Canada. The law is ALL about the wording…

    • Thank you for the update. Yes indeed I was referring to the Ruger SR22 22LR Rimfire rifle, NOT the pistol.

Can you please give me the model# to the above banana clip that is identical to the BX-25 that can be purchased in Canada….
From the reviews I’ve read the biggest issue was jamming for these clips

  3. The promag 50 round, drum mag. Did you get it to work well with the Sr.22 rifle.I have trouble with mine

    • Indeed, yes it worked fine with all the specified ammunition. What brand of 22 are you using ?
